Becoming🐛🦋

Change can feel pretty daunting. Especially when it is just beginning.

I’ve been watching a lot of artist interviews lately. My recent favourite has been Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. (This actually existed long before I watched the interview)

It reminded me of the importance of process. Of enjoying making and allow your art to take you where it needs to.

It finally compelled me to finish this piece. A WIP for a LinkedIn banner that had been sitting unfinished for months now. As so many things that I make do at the moment.

I was frustrated by that. I felt stuck but stuck means a push to do more. And change isn’t possible without that. Or improvement.

Things are not done without doing. So this is the first step.

Out of Your Shell 🐚

My piece for @brisbaneillustrationfair zine 3 and my first finished painting of the year 🎉🎉

I was very inspired by the recent Brisbane weather for this. Very gloomy and a bit overcast with the occasional sun shower (and lots of snails)

I wanted the piece to be about how time changes things. I thought the end of 2024 was a bit of a bust. I didn’t like where I was. But I wasn’t even trying to move forward. I was stuck in my metaphorical shell. So I’m making a conscious effort to move forward this year. Doing BIF again, engaging more with social media, making more art, anything and everything to keep moving forward. Life is weird, progress is slow but at least it’s something.

So while there’s comfort in a shell it’s no place to live. And once you leave you won’t want to go back. Life is always better when you fully experience it anyway 💖💖

FAWN 🦌 - The Visitor

I know this is a few days late now but I wanted to refine the piece digitally after a failed gouache painting.

I may switch to digital paintings for a little. A few unfinished paintings have put me behind and I want to try to catch up as best I can! :))

SPARKLE ✨ - Moonboy admired how the comet sparkled!

When I think sparkly I think space, stars and comets so I had lots of ideas for this piece! And of course when I draw space I have to draw Moonboy 😌

Unfortunately there were a few abandoned pieces due to time constraints (and gouache drying out 😭😭). Maybe I’ll revisit those later but I’m really happy with how this turned out💖💖

Also I’m trying scans rather than photos since with work I’m missing the sunlight 🥲🥲

DAISY 🌼 - Loves me, Loves me not

I found out while researching the prompt that daisy’s are used in the game he loves me, he loves me not! I knew I wanted the Daisy’s to be a character so I decided to incorporate them playing the game on themselves in this piece!

Also I’m going to try (as best I can) to do gouache for whole challenge! I’ll still be doing digital colour roughs for everything but I really love the look of gouache and want to explore the medium!

There may be some smaller scale pieces here and there to try and keep it achievable! But I’m so keen to make things! :DD

Good Bread 🍞

What a weekend!! I can’t believe BIF is over now! It feels so surreal 🥹🥹I’m so glad it went so well and was so much fun!! I am beyond excited for the next one 💖💖

Also this guy was one actually one of several illustrations for a bread zine I hope to make. That idea is still cookin at the moment but it should hopefully be ready for my next market whenever that will be :))

Eclipse 🌑

This is a redo of my piece for issue 2 of BIF. I don’t think I’ll post the original. I was super unhappy with it. Especially since it was a Moonboy piece that didn’t turn out.

I was afraid that I couldn’t draw something good with him anymore. But he was a character I loved so much so after I submitted I started a new piece, to prove I could make something that I was happy with.

I think BIF is making me take stock of my ideas. I’ve had a few failed pieces for one reason or another but now I think I know what I want to do. I want to draw what makes me happy :)) So expect to see more Moonboy haha⭐️

I used to have a bush outside my window when I was a kid with purple flowers and lots of bees. So when I think about spring and flowers I think of the hardworking bees outside my window 💜
